1/4 Mile Performance | Brake Performance

February 19, 2006

I took a couple friends out with me to perform a brake test on the stock brakes. You can see a video of this test in the Video section. This test was intended to create a starting point to judge against the gain in stopping power from my upcoming 5-lug big brake conversion. We set up marker cones on the side of the road to measure stopping distance. I then took the car up to 100 KPH (APX 60 MPH) and at a planned marker I stomped on the brakes. I left about 10 minutes in between each run to cool the brakes. Let me say here that I am stupid. I don't have ABS in this car, so locking up the brakes does not give an accurate indication of what the brake can do. Threshold braking (pumping or repeatedly locking the brakes) is required and you will see from this test that that style of braking actually saves a lot of distance. In this test I made 4 runs, 3 where the brakes were locked and one threshold. Here are my results.

1st Run 2nd Run 3rd Run 4th Run
Braking Method: Locked Locked Locked Threshold
Distance to Stop From 60 MPH: 135 ft 127 ft 133 ft 118 ft
